Western Star unveils big banger

A 16L engine to be fitted exclusively to Western Star trucks has been unveiled by the truck manufacturer at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The Detroit Diesel DD 16 displaces the 15.6L engine and can be rated at up to 2050ft-lb of torque and up to 600hp.

Western Star says the new engine will only be available through its brand on the US market. This suggests that the largest engine available in a Freightliner is likely to be the smaller DD 15 from Detroit for US customers. Specified to meet the US EPA 2010 exhaust emission rules the, DD 16 uses EGR as well as SCR technology to reduce the nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in exhaust fumes.
