Following a meeting with the recently-formed Heavy Vehicle Road Signage Reference Group (HVRSRG), the Western Australian government has issued new Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) warning sign options for heavy vehicles.
The HVRSRG was created in response to concerns from the road transport industry about then-announced RAV sign requirements which were to come into effect on 1 January next year. Chaired by Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier, Meredith Hammat, the group features eight representatives from various sections and organisations within the transport industry.
After the HVRSRG’s meeting on 18 October, it has been determined that transport operators will not be required to replace the current ‘Long Vehicle’ and ‘Roadtrain’ signs with the new RAV warning signs.
Additionally, operators of vehicles longer than 22 metres have a choice of signage they can use: either the existing ‘Long Vehicle’ or ‘Roadtrain’ signs, or new graphic signs which show the length of the vehicle.
The new RAV warning signs, while optional, offer various benefits, including providing more information to other road users for both safety and education purposes, and allowing operators to choose the best signage for their specific vehicle length and configuration.
