The Western Australia State Government has announced upgrades and safety improvements to about 100 traffic locations on Western Australia's road network under the State Black Spot Program for 2015.
WA Transport Minister, Dean Nalder, said the funding included $20 million from the State Government in 2015-16 and $5 million from local governments.
In regional areas, the projects range from new traffic lights and street lighting for the corner of Old Coast Road and Mandurah Road, to a new roundabout in Kalgoorlie at the intersection of Lionel and Egan Streets, to a wombat crossing and road upgrades at Coolibah Drive in the Kimberley.
“This important program has delivered $330 million worth of projects across the State since it began in 2000,” Minister Nalder said. “It's part of our integrated approach to transport with measures to address congestion and get people home from work faster and safer.
“The Black Spot Program is helping to reduce road trauma and deliver savings to the community in terms of less personal injury and motor vehicle damage.”
A total of 102 projects will be funded in this year's program, including 68 in regional WA and 34 in the Perth metropolitan area. Safety improvements will also be carried out on 86 local government roads and on 16 State-owned roads.
Since 2000, the Black Spot program has funded 2,769 road improvement projects across the State aimed at preventing crashes and injury to road users.
