Victoria’s fuel security has received a boost with the Viva Energy Geelong refinery hitting a significant milestone.
Progress on the construction of three new tanks, each 30 metres tall, is well advanced.
Combined the tanks will provide a total of 90 million litres of diesel storage, approximately one week of Victoria’s diesel consumption.
According to Viva Energy, each tank is constructed with a substantial 600 tonnes of high-quality plate steel and built by Brockman Engineering, a Geelong business, using local BlueScope steel.
Up to 140 dedicated professionals have been contributing to the project at peak construction.
Some four kilometres of piping are being used to efficiently deliver diesel to the tanks.
“This initiative brings to life our commitment to Australia’s fuel security and ensuring a robust future for Victoria’s diesel supply,” the company said in a statement.
“We’re proud to be a part of this project, and we look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.”
Maintenance work in June that saw an incident involving a contractor crane dropped on site contributed to a delay on the project by three months during which time repairs were sought.
