Victorian bridge approved for upgrade

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a $2.6 million upgrade to the Kaniva bridge along the Western Highway in Victoria near the South Australian border.

The upgrade of the bridge over the rail line at Kaniva along the Western Highway will begin within weeks following the awarding of the contract to civil engineering company  Cut and Fill.

According to Minister Albanese, the project will strengthen the bridge’s deck and install new safety barriers and guard fences.

“As well as making the Highway safer for all users, this project will strengthen the bridge to make sure truck drivers can continue to use this direct route between Melbourne and the State’s western region,” he said, noting that more than 1,000 trucks use the Kaniva rail bridge daily.

Victorian Public Transport and Roads Minister Terry Mulder said Victoria was proud of its reputation as a freight and logistics hub.

“Victoria possesses some of Australia’s most valuable freight and logistics assets; we have the nation’s largest container port, the greatest investment in warehousing and the largest concentration of road transport providers,” he added.
