The South Australia Department for Transport Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) has released a new information bulletin outlining the requirements and conditions under which tri-axle dollies will be acceptable for operation in South Australia.
The use of triaxle converter dollies in vehicle combinations on the South Australian road network will be allowed provided:
• the vehicle combination is certified under PBS;
• the vehicle combination is operating on the appropriate PBS network;
• the triaxle converter dolly, if fitted with air suspension, must be fitted with longitudinal air pipes between the air bags on each side of the axles in the group with a minimum inside diameter of 25mm to satisfy requirements for load sharing and Road Friendly Suspension certification compliance;
• the suspension must load share effectively under all normal operating conditions; and.
• the tri-axle converter dolly is either a fixed draw bar design with a conventional fifth wheel coupling; or a pivoted draw bar design with a Ball-Race turntable; or a similar design that ensures converter dolly frame stability.
