Uber’s autonomous truck with new name and technology

Uber has reportedly dropped all remaining Otto branding, according to media reports emerging from the US.

The US technology brand has reportedly killed off the Otto truck brand following a trademark dispute raised by Canada’s Otto Motors and a legal battle with rival Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent, Alphabet.

Going forward, the old Otto business will continue operating under the mantle of Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group (ATG).

“Our self-driving truck effort started in 2016 with the addition of the team from Otto,” Uber ATG said on its website.

“Since then, we've combined the best of Otto and ATG to build technology for both cars and trucks. With that upgrade, we've retired the Otto name and integrated all of our self-driving efforts into Uber ATG.”

On the back of the announcement, Uber has unveiled a new generation autonomous truck, featuring an upgraded set of sensors supplied by Silicon Valley company, Velodyne, as various media outlets reported.

“The new Uber ATG truck tech loadout…includes upgraded components and software throughout the vehicle in addition to the new spinning LiDAR, and is completely refreshed, with new hardware sensors and new software components throughout,” TechCrunch revealed.

ATG’s Trucks Product Manager, Alden Woodrow, also told the renowned technology news outlet that the upgrade was “not made as a direct result of the ongoing Uber/Waymo legal fight”.
