Truck sales maintaining growth

Truck manufacturer and component supplier group, the Truck Industry Council (TIC), said that November saw double-digit growth in all sectors compared to the same month in 2016.

November 2017 sales were the second best on record, according to the TIC, only beaten by the Pre-Global Financial Crisis November result of 2007.

Three thousand six hundred and thirty (3,630) heavy trucks and vans were delivered last month compared to 3,776 in August 2007, 3.8 per cent shy of an all-time record.

Year-to-date sales are 33,352, tracking 11.5 per cent up on 2016 when 29,903 units were delivered to the end of Novmber. Compared to the all-time record year of 2007, year-to-date 2017 sales have lagged by 3.7 per cent (1,270 trucks).

The heavy duty segment has maintained a “massive” 33.7 per cent for the month compared to November 2016. This was followed by the medium duty truck segment which was up 20 per cent, closely followed by light duty trucks up 19.5 per cent and vans, up by 10.1 per cent when compared to this time last year.

Year-to-date, heavy sales are tracking up 22.3 per cent over those of the same period last year, with total heavy truck sales to the end of November reaching 10,751. In terms of actual truck numbers the sales gap has now stretched to almost two thousand (1,959) more Heavy trucks sold year-to-date than in 2016.

Medium duty truck sales have reportedly seen the weakest growth of all the segments in 2017, however November was up 20 per cent (124 trucks) over the same month last year, with a total of 745 new medium trucks being delivered in November. Year-to-date, medium truck sales are ahead by 279 units, a gain of 4.4 per cent over the 2016 year-to-date mark.

The light duty truck sector has been performing well over the past couple of years, according to the TIC, and that trend continues to hold strong in 2017. In November small truck sales were up 19.5 per cent (175 trucks) over the corresponding month last year. One thousand and seventy three (1,073) Light trucks were delivered in November, bringing the year-to-date sales tally to 10,571 for the light duty truck segment. This is 8.2 per cent, or 797 trucks, up over the same period in 2016.

The light duty van segment has been “a bit of a roller coaster ride in 2017”, however sales continue to track above 2016 levels year-to-date. A total of 511 new vans were sold for the month of November, an increase of 47 units over the November 2016 result. Year-to-date a total of 5,384 vans have been delivered to the end of November 2017, up 8.3 per cent (414 vans) compared with the same period last year.

“It was again heartening to witness strong, double digit, sales growth across all heavy vehicle segments in November,” said TIC President, Phil Taylor.

“The strong sales seen across the first three quarters of 2017 have continued into the final quarter of the year. It was a particularly strong month for the heavy duty segment with sales continuing to lead the way in 2017.

“Medium duty sales were also very strong for the month and as we have come to expect, light duty truck and van sales were again solid. With just December sales to come, the industry won’t see the 2007 sales record broken, but I think that we will witness the second best result ever and the best heavy vehicle sales in over a decade,” he said.

“In November all segments experienced double digit growth when compared with November 2016 sales and that is very pleasing,” said TIC Chief Executive Officer, Tony McMullan.

“The heavy duty truck segment again led the way for the month, as we have seen all year. It was pleasing to see medium duty sales pick-up in November, an indicator that fleet renewal is actively being pursued by industry across all heavy vehicle segments.

“With only one month remaining in 2017 we will not be rewriting the history books this year, however the market is at a very high level and we may see record sales in 2018,” he said.
