The new truck market delivered its third-best result on record in 2025 despite economic headwinds and an influx of used heavy vehicles.
According to the Truck Industry Council’s (TIC) T-Mark data, total heavy vehicle and van sales for the year reached 45,191 units, down 11.9 per cent on the record 51,277 units sold in 2024.
The fourth quarter saw 11,464 new vehicles delivered, marking the fourth-best quarter on record.
Heavy Duty trucks faced the steepest decline, with 14,297 units sold for the year – down 16.7 per cent on 2024, and for the first time in a decade, light-duty trucks outsold their heavier counterparts.
Light Duty trucks recorded 13,712 sales, holding the largest market share at 33.1 per cent, while Medium Duty trucks continued their downward trend with 6,672 units sold, representing just 12.2 per cent of the market.
Light Duty vans also softened, with 10,510 units sold, down 8.1 per cent year-on-year.
“Despite challenging conditions, the Australian truck market remains strong, consistently exceeding 40,000 sales annually since 2018,” said TIC CEO Tony McMullan.
“However, the industry remains concerned about the age of the national fleet, which is older than in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, impacting safety, public health and environmental outcomes.”
The 2025 results highlight a market adapting to economic pressures, a changing vehicle mix and operators’ evolving preferences.
