Transport Women Australia reflects on conference

Transport Women Australia Limited (TWAL) said that its ’Creating Connections’ conference – held in Tullamarine, Melbourne, 18-20 May – has been hailed a huge success by attendees and sponsors.

“I am so grateful to have such a fantastic team – The Board, Di Caldwell-Smith, Coralie Chapman, Michelle Harwood and the volunteers – Rebecca Coleman, Tracey Boschetti, Rosie Cirillo, Rachel Hesse, Paula Sita and Penelope Newton plus our emcee Jodie Broadbent and our outstanding auctioneer Denis Robertson,” said TWAL Chair, Jacquelene Brotherton of Oxford Cold Storage.

“An enormous thank you to our accidental sponsors – OneVue, Linfox Logistics, the Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association (LBRCA), P and T Boschetti and DDL Recruitment. The most heartfelt gratitude though goes to Oxford Cold Storage, this conference would not have been possible without their unswerving support over the past six months, and the Board of TWAL cannot begin to thank them enough.

“Special mention goes to Ron Finemore Transport for having the largest team at the conference, also for sponsoring and becoming a corporate member. Also to Freighting Solutions – congratulations on being the successful bidder on the MCG corporate box for the footy.

“The conference was opened by the Leader of the Reason Party, Fiona Patten MLC who stayed to enjoy the festivities of the cocktail party sponsored by our Foundation Business Partner, Volvo Australia Group.

“The joint venture between TWAL, DECA and the Volvo Australia Group ‘Women Driving Transport Careers’ was launched at the cocktail party by Michelle Harwood (TWAL), Simon Macaulay (DECA) and Teresia Fors (Volvo). Teresia inspired the audience with her passion for the industry.

“The conference commenced on Saturday morning with a fabulous breakfast sponsored by Viva Energy with Kersten Ross informing us of what Viva Energy is doing for gender equality and her own career progression into transport and logistics.

“NTI our Foundation Business Partner and Janelle Green, their representative spoke in the opening session about the importance of mentoring and creating connections.

“Sessions followed with a panel on Safety Management Systems which was facilitated by Teresia Fors of Volvo, and then a TWUSUPER funded session 'How to be Super Smart Women'. The highlight of the day just prior to lunch was an inspiring speech on managing ‘Fear’ during public speaking and in new situations from Elena Morandini, a representative from Toastmasters International (Werribee Club).

“Our Leaders in Transportation session featured presentations by Women in Trucking (USA), Women in Road Transport (NZ), Victorian Transport Association, Supply Chain Logistics Association of Australia, the Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association of NSW and TWAL. This session was facilitated by Jo Tye of SRT Logistics.  The day finalised with the TWAL/DECA presentation on ‘Women Driving Transport Careers’.

“The PACCAR/Cummins sponsored dinner was a massive hit with everyone. The food was fabulous and atmosphere great with lots of connections created and old ones strengthened. The table decorations were made and supplied by our member, Tracey Boschetti.

“Sunday morning started very early with a Volvo sponsored breakfast and speaker and everyone was presented with a book by the Fitpreneur, Nikki Fogden-Moore. This was followed by a thought provoking presentation by Dr Iderlina (Derlie) Mateo-Babiano. The morning was completed by an enlightening presentation by the Girl Guides National Programme Manager and the highlight of the day, the Keynote address from Ellen Voie President, Founder and CEO of Women in Trucking.

“Special mentions must go to our booth sponsors – Health Booth – Chilled Australia Specialised Logistics; Massage Booth – Scania, everyone loved the massages.”
