Co-founder of Lindsay Brothers Transport, Tom Lindsay, passed away peacefully on Tuesday 16 November 2021, aged 90 years.
Tom’s partnership with his brother, Peter, who passed in 1999, began in 1953.
Their unique partnership served to guide their local Lindsay Brothers Transport venture through many years of growth, culminating in the thriving national transport and logistics company that Lindsay Australia Limited is today.
Tom and Peter built the Lindsay Brothers business through long-term associations and friendships with their customers and suppliers, not least an unwavering association with Kenworth and DAF dealer Brown and Hurley which has supplied the company with a multitude of trucks over the years.
The Lindsay Brothers were known for their willingness to embrace technology and were pioneers in refrigerated produce transport in Australia as well as early adopters of B-double combinations and safety equipment on vehicles.
Tom was also a major contributor to the Coffs Harbour region he called home for his entire life.
Lindsay Transport is the largest private employer in the Coffs Harbour area and Tom was prominent in many local organisations, notably Rotary.
Through the North Coast Cranes company, Tom was involved in many large developments including the establishment of the Bonville International Golf Club – one of the premier courses in Australia – in 1992.
Tom was, in fact, a part owner of the club for some time.
In 2002, following the death of his brother Peter in 1999, Tom presided over the transition of the private Lindsay Brothers company into the corporate Lindsay Australia Limited, staying on as a director for several years.
His wealth of experience proved invaluable in helping to establish the new entity.
In 2003, Tom and Peter Lindsay were inducted into the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in recognition of their service to the Australian Transport Industry.
Tom leaves a lasting legacy of a great organisation, family and friendships and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
His Celebration of Life service will, due to limited capacity, be attended by a small number including family, close friends and colleagues.
