Toll Group has launched its first heavy electric vehicle (EV) program in Perth, Western Australia, in partnership with Coles.
Launched from the Coles Distribution Centre (DC) in Kewdale, two new Volvo FM battery electric prime movers will replace conventional diesel-powered trucks, abating approximately 100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per vehicle annually.
Capable of travelling up to 270 kilometres on a single charge, these vehicles represent a major step towards more sustainable grocery transport.
The EVs are expected to complete up to 52 deliveries to Coles stores across Perth each week, supported by dedicated dual-port 180-kilowatt charging stations at their Kewdale DC.
Beyond these environmental benefits, the heavy EVs are equipped with advanced safety systems and technology designed to protect drivers, enhance service delivery performance, and uphold community safety.
The initiative forms part of Toll’s greater $67 million investment in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and charging infrastructure, co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) through its ‘Driving the Nation’ program.
“Our commitment to a more sustainable logistics future isn’t possible without the support of our key customers,” said Toll President Retail & Consumer, Nick Vrckovski.
“We’re proud of our longstanding partnership with Coles, and this initiative demonstrates how we’re working together to deliver service excellence, safety, and sustainable transport solutions.”
Coles State Transport Manager, Ian Kitching, further recognised the impact of this operational milestone.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions associated with our transportation network,” he said.
“Welcoming our first heavy EVs to our fleet in Perth is more than just a technological upgrade, it’s a long-term investment in developing a more sustainable supply chain.”
