Tenders open to fix major Darwin intersection

Tenders are currently being sought for upgrade works to the intersection of McMillans and Lee Point Road to increase safety for motorists, according to Transport Minister, Peter Styles.

He said due to increased traffic volumes at the intersection, the major upgrade was vital for safety reasons.

“The Giles Government takes very seriously safety on our roads and we are committed to doing all we can to achieve this,” Mr Styles said.

“The northern suburbs are rapidly growing and with new suburbs such as Muirhead and Lyons, traffic volume will continue to increase.

“Our government has committed $5 million towards the duplication of Lee Point Road to ease congestion on the busy road and cater for our northern suburb motorists.”

The upgrade works will include the extension of the left turn lane into Lee Point Road off McMillans Road, the provision of two turn lanes at the intersection, the installation of traffic signals for the turn and the installation of streetlights over the turn lane.

The safety upgrade would commence mid April 2014 and take eight weeks to complete.

The works will be funded by $500,000 from the Northern Territory Government and $400,000 by the Black Spot program under the Australian Government.
