The cab strength test devised by Volvo was introduced as law in Sweden 50 years ago this year. The safety test became the benchmark for all cab strength testing around the world after its introduction. This year here it has been superseded in Swedish law by the adoption of the ECE 29 standard. Volvo will continue to use the original test as its requirements still exceed those of the EU regulation.
The test consists of three stages. Firstly, a 15 tonne weight is applied to the top of the cab roof. Secondly, a cylindrical pendulum hits the cab’s front left supporting A pillar. Lastly, a one-time pendulum is released from a height of 3m and strikes the rear wall of the cab.
