38 of the 141 speed cameras in New South Wales are to be removed following a report by the Auditor General stating the cameras had no significant safety benefit. The report criticised the way the speed camera issue had been managed in NSW.
“We would like to see the RTA commit to a rigourous and completely transparent camera calibration program so motorists have absolute confidence that the cameras are only positioned to improve road safety,” said NRMA President Wendy Machin after the announcement was made.
“The Auditor General's report is much more than an assessment of individual speed cameras, it is an indictment of the way the whole camera issue was being managed in New South Wales.”
