Long distance freight carrier, SGGS Transport, has opened a new depot in Melbourne’s Laverton North.
The 4,500m² site features a full drive around B-double hardstand and double storey offices situated in a prime location for freight movements.
An estimated 70 prime movers will move through the site on a weekly basis.
It’s been a busy start to 2024 for the fledgling company which has implemented a fleet tracking system to improve efficiency and monitor the location of its vehicles in real-time as well as having launched a number of new initiatives.
Investments in new assets have been complemented with driver training programs to improve safety and compliance with regulations.
The fleet has introduced 16 new Kenworth K200s this year in addition to three Kenworth Legend SARs with more units on order.
Every unit is rated for roadtrain application and powered by a Euro 5 X15 Cummins engine.
“Kenworth is a very reliable truck and we are all about keeping up with the newest fleet to service our customers with the best quality equipment,” said Dannii Spiteri, Operations Manager.
Part of Spiteri’s responsibilities includes PBS permits and approvals to bring the costings down for customers when running the bigger combinations.
“It means more space for freight and less units to run,” she told Prime Mover.
“All our new trucks coming in have been fitted with the weight scales and all have been PBS approved including all of our trailers.”
One of the added advantages provided by the new site in Melbourne is the flexibility to operate B-triples which have recently commenced deployment.
New permits have also been granted to run A-doubles in both Melbourne and Sydney.
SGGS is also partnering with technology providers to integrate advanced logistics solutions, such as route optimisation and predictive analytics into its operations according to Spiteri.
“By enhancing our customer service capabilities through the implementation of a customer relationship management system we can better track and respond to customer inquiries and feedback,” she said.
“We’re establishing strategic partnerships with other transportation companies to expand our network and offer more comprehensive services to our customers,” said Spiteri.
“Implementing a proactive maintenance program for our vehicles to minimise downtime and ensure reliability is another area we have bolstered.
“Our services are expanding to include last-mile delivery solutions in urban areas to meet the growing demand for e-commerce deliveries.”
