Scania ranks high in sustainability

Scania was named one of the world’s 100 most sustainable corporations, according to the prestigious Corporate Knights Global 100 list.

Inclusion in the Global 100 index is determined using twelve quantitative sustainability indicators, including the amount of revenue companies generate per unit of energy consumption, the ratio of CEO to average worker salary, lost time injury rate, carbon emissions and leadership diversity.

Roger McCarthy, Managing Director of Scania Australia, said the company’s inclusion on the list is attributed to a number of factors including sustainable activities, vehicles which reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions as well as a strong focus on diversity – which it openly delivers to its Australian market.

“Scania in Australia is very focused on sustainable activities. One of the ways is by helping our customers to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by adopting our latest engine technology,” said McCarthy.

“We are the first manufacturer to offer a selection of Euro 6 bus and truck solutions to Australian customers, and we have already been selected by ACTION in Canberra to provide the first Euro 6 compliant fleet of buses in Australia.

“We also have a long-term recycling program in place to return used transmission components to Sweden for remanufacturing for a second life,” he said.

“From a diversity perspective, Scania is proud to have female executives in senior positions including: Chief Financial Officer, Senior Business Controller, Truck Rental Manager, and two Used Vehicle Account Managers,” Roger says.

The list, which is announced each year during the World Economic Forum in Davos, includes companies from all sectors of the economy. Ranked in place 38, Scania was the highest ranked Swedish company, and the second highest in the automotive industry after BMW.

McCarthy said focusing on sustainability is a key success factor for Scania. More than 90 per cent of the environmental impact of Scania products occurs during use.

He said that is why Scania through toolbox product offerings like Ecolution by Scania, helps customers to dramatically reduce costs and carbon while improving road safety.

“Scania also works hard to provide safe and healthy workplaces and to ensure that the company’s own operations and products are as lean and clean as possible,” he said.
