The new engines are part of Scania’s new engine platform. While designed to run on biogas as well as natural gas, these engines provide similar performance and characteristics to diesel engines.
They have been tailored for use in distribution, refuse collection and city bus operation, with various configurations available for each application.
The basis for these engines is the latest five cylinder 9.3 litre engine platform (130mm bore) used for Euro 5 and EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) diesel engines. Modifications include cylinder heads for centrally mounted spark plugs, a gas injection system in the intake manifold and a specially adapted camshaft. Combustion is controlled by a closed-loop lambda sensor system and an air mass gauge is fitted to the intake. The engine system automatically adapts to the gas quality.
Scania has now released its new 270 and 305 hp engines for trucks and buses onto the market. These engines come with Scania engineered fuel supply and storage systems tailored to the requirements of distribution trucks and city buses. These engines can be specified on Scania P Series trucks with short, day or low entry cabs. Chassis configurations are either 4×2 or 6×2 rear steer, both with full air suspension; or Scania OmniCity and OmniLink buses.
