The South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) has launched a new GPS and telemetry user guide, during its 2025 conference.
Developed with funding support from the ATA, the guide arose from a recent prosecution that involved the erroneous analysis of GPS data by enforcement officers.
During the launch, SARTA CEO, Steve Shearer, called on trucking businesses to consider using telemetry systems, certified by Transport Certification Australia, to avoid the risk of enforcement agencies interpreting their data incorrectly.
“The stress, harm and the highly expensive court case could all have been avoided if the authorities had been properly trained in GPS and telemetry systems and data analysis, something which we have proposed to the SA Minister for Police,” said Shearer, referring to the prosecution.
“The case also highlighted a number of critical issues that all heavy vehicle operators should be aware of when considering buying or upgrading their telemetry systems.
“That’s why we went to the trouble and expense of developing this guide with Chris Koniditsiotis, who is one of, if not the most, experienced and expert telemetry professionals in the country.”
Chris Koniditsiotis and Steve Shearer worked together to develop the GPS and telemetry guide, which is based upon feedback from a wide range of operators about their experience with GPS and telemetry systems.
