Road toll continues to fall

The latest road deaths Australia report reveals that the average national monthly road toll has continued to fall, with March 2012 showing a 7.1 per cent decrease in fatalities from March 2011.

Produced by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics, the road deaths Australia reports are produced monthly, and compare road death data from the last five years to the current month.

The March report shows that in the 12 month period from March 2011 to March 2012, the national road toll was 1301, compared to 1328 fatalities in the year March 2010 to March 2011. Males made up over two-thirds of the toll.

Per head of population, the Northern Territory had the most fatalities, with 20.76 deaths per 100,000 people for March 2011 to March 2012. In comparison, NSW had 5.21 deaths per 100,000 people in the same period.
