RACV expects “fairer deal” from Federal Budget

The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) has welcomed the project commitments in the Federal Budget for Eastern Victoria, but said even more funding is needed.

RACV General Manager Public Policy, Brian Negus, said the $7.6 billion in infrastructure funding for Victoria were a significant boost, but the Federal Government should have provided more funding for the Princes Highway East project.

“With more than 35 kilometres of highway duplication remaining, RACV calls on the Federal Government to ensure that the next Budget provides the funding to complete the upgrade that will deliver a safer route all the way to Sale.

“This project is essential not only to improve safety but also for future economic growth to improve the social well-being of the community and spur jobs growth.”

Mr Negus said RACV members in regional communities expected a fairer deal from this budget, as they are not seeing a fair return on the taxes they pay.

“Regional motorists are already over-taxed and not getting value for money with regard to transport infrastructure and it is totally inadequate that of the 38 cents per litre paid in fuel excise, the Government has only guaranteed one cent to go into future road funding.

“While we welcome the Budget investment in roads and infrastructure; RACV is also calling for a more genuine reform of motoring taxes as currently there is no link between the revenue raised from these taxes and spending on road transport infrastructure.”

“If a much greater proportion of total fuel excise was dedicated to transport infrastructure it would go a long way to further improving the safety of our rural highways,” Mr Negus said.

“We are calling for bona fide reform of motoring taxes rather than just an interim change. RACV is more than happy to engage with the Federal Government on options which would provide a fairer deal and we will continue to ensure our members interests are strongly represented at a national level,” Mr Negus said.
