Putting the focus on safety and compliance at Trucking Australia 2014

In today’s industry, we hear two words over and over again – ‘safety’ and ‘compliance’.

That’s why we’ve put them first on the program at Trucking Australia 2014, our national event where operators can share their experiences and make a difference to the road transport industry.

Trucking Australia 2014 will be held on Hamilton Island on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June 2014.

The trucking industry’s safety record has improved dramatically over the last few years. But there’s still more to do, particularly in addressing the serious injuries that can occur within the depot.

In the first official session at Trucking Australia 2014, 2013 Don Watson Memorial Award winner Simon Skazlic will discuss how his company, K&S Freighters, has worked to improve the safety of its workers right from the moment they start their shift.

Simon joined K&S Freighters in 1990 and has held various roles in Administration, Operations, Quality, Fleet & Maintenance. He is now the company’s General Manager, HS&E/Compliance.

In his presentation, Simon will talk about his experiences in improving health and safety in the workplace, before joining an open forum where delegates will share their experiences and develop an updated safety action plan for the industry.

The ideas developed in this session will feed into the ATA’s strategic plan, which determines its lobbying, communications and research priorities.

Following the safety forum, delegates will work together in a compliance masterclass to aid struggling trucking business Fictitious Transport.

The owners and executives of Fictitious Transport know the business doesn’t spend enough on maintenance. They also suspect some of their drivers have been issued with speeding tickets, although the company has not been notified by the police. They are rightly worried about the company’s compliance with the chain of responsibility laws – and their personal liability.

The masterclass will be led by Ian Pendered of Pentrans Consulting, a NSW-based registered training organisation. It provides a comprehensive range of accreditation services, as well as nationally recognised chain of responsibility, fatigue management, driving operations and logistics training.
In this frank discussion, delegates will debate the benefits of different compliance measures, as well as how to make sure compliance procedures stay strong over time.

The safety session with Simon Skazlic will begin at 2:00pm on Friday 6 June at the Hamilton Island Convention Centre, followed by the Fictitious Transport compliance masterclass led by Ian Pendered at 4:00pm.

Of course, Trucking Australia 2014 isn’t all work. You’ll enjoy great networking at the famous Kenworth Legends Luncheon, a BBQ hosted by BPW Transpec in the resort’s Front Street, and the presentation of the 2014 National Trucking Industry Awards at the ATA Foundation Sponsors Gala Awards Dinner.

The full program features first class forums where delegates can share their ideas and experiences, as well as optional sessions where attendees can improve their business presentation skills or hear about the latest transport policy and regulatory developments from the NTC and NHVR.

And with average June temperatures of 18 – 22°C, taking part in Trucking Australia 2014 at Hamilton Island is a great way to escape the cold of winter.

Full delegate registration for Trucking Australia 2014 is only $475 (incl GST), and four star accommodation is available at the special event rate of only $270 per night (incl GST).
