Truck platooning is a concept many of the truck manufacturers have been experimenting with for a number of years. Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Iveco and others have run trials on public roads with trucks driving close together in line, with the actions of the lead truck controlling those of the following group.
A recent video posted by Scania goes through some of the basic rules the system follows to ensure safety for road users as well as getting efficiency gains from running a number of trucksin a tight pack.
In this example, the driver in each truck retains steering control at all times, but in some of the trials the lead truck has had complete control of the following vehicle with the driver of the following truck able to intervene when and if required.
