Australia Post experienced its busiest delivery day on record during this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales period.
Over 5.8 million parcels were processed in one day, reflecting a parcel volume surge of 6.3 per cent year-on-year (YoY).
Shoppers have spent approximately $1.5 billion online during this period across 3.1 million Australian households – a 9.2 per cent increase YoY.
Despite this record-breaking Black Friday and Cyber Monday four-day period, parcel volumes have been growing significantly since November in tandem with early retail deals, indicating shoppers are being strategic and value-driven online ahead of Christmas.
This year’s top performing parcel categories included Athleisure, Books and Stationery, and Women’s Fashion, all of which experienced significant YoY growth.
The Department Stores category also performed strongly in this period as Australians continue to support domestic online retailers.
Across the country, New South Wales shopped the most online, accounting for one this of total eCommerce parcel volumes.
Western Australia recorded the strongest growth in online shopping, with a 10.8 per cent spike YoY, followed by Victoria, which was up 6.3 per cent YoY, and Queensland, which was up six per cent YoY.
Australia Post Executive General Manager of Parcel, Post and e-commerce Services, Gary Starr, said Black Friday and Cyber Monday continue to be defining moments on the retail calendar despite starting sooner.
“Our latest Quarterly e-commerce report found 50 per cent of shoppers had their sights set on Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, a trend clearly reflected in this record-setting sales period,” he said.
“We anticipate this surge to continue well up until Christmas, and to keep up with the demand, Australia Post has been preparing for another record-breaking delivery season.”
Australia Post’s preparation to support increased parcel volumes includes investing in next-generation post offices, deploying a new national electric delivery vehicle fleet, increasing its workforce and implementing weekend deliveries and extended trading hours.
“We are ready to deliver the magic this Christmas,” Starr said.
The AusPost app also experienced a significant rise in engagement over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period with 14.8 million visits and 2.7 million customer uses, up 28 per cent YoY.
Parcel tracking remained the app’s most frequently accessed feature.
Parcel Locker usage continues to grow, offering customers a free, secure and convenient way to receive their online shopping.
Ahead of Christmas, Australia Post is also reminding customers of last sending dates.
Parcels should be sent by 22 December for same-state deliveries and 19 December for interstate deliveries, or by 23 December if sending via Express Post.
People sending parcels to or from WA, the Northern Territory, Tasmania or regional and remote locations should allow for a few extra days.
