The NSW Net Zero Commission is calling on the road transport industry to guide the first state-specific decarbonisation pathway scenarios, with submissions open until 31 July.
Developed with support from national science agency, CSIRO, and Climateworks Centre, the pathways will map practical routes to achieving NSW’s legislated emissions reduction targets across key sectors of the economy.
The Commission is seeking evidence from industry, businesses, researchers and communities on the opportunities and barriers associated with the transition to net zero.
For the heavy vehicle segment, the consultation presents an opportunity to highlight the practical challenges surrounding freight decarbonisation, including infrastructure requirements, technology deployment, investment needs, workforce capability and the broader economic impacts of transitioning transport fleets.
The Commission is also seeking feedback on how sectors can better coordinate their transition efforts, as well as measures to support equitable outcomes for regional communities and First Nations peoples.
Transport is one of eight focus sectors alongside electricity and energy, industry, resources, the built environment, land and agriculture, waste, and carbon removals.
Net Zero Commissioner Professor, Frank Jotzo, said industry participation would be critical to ensuring the pathways reflected practical experience.
“Achieving NSW’s legislated targets requires every sector of the economy to play a part,” he said.
“By sharing your real-world experience, you can support a transition that is grounded in reality. Help us build a practical tool that government, industry and communities can act from with confidence.”
Submissions are open until 31 July 2026 through the Net Zero Commission’s website, with the Commission encouraging contributions from businesses and organisations across the transport supply chain.
A virtual information session will also be held as part of the consultation process.
