The 21st annual Newcastle and Hunter Valley Transport Awareness Day will be held this Sunday and will commence at 9.00am with a convoy of more than 200 trucks travelling from the Sandgate Fruit Markets to the Newcastle Foreshore Park.
The event will also include a range of family themed activities are planned at the park including musical entertainment and a truck show.
The organisers present the Awareness Day as the opportunity for the Newcastle and Hunter community to learn how to live with trucks, respect the trucking industry and learn the importance of trucking to the community and the Australian economy.
The day also provides the opportunity for prospective employees get to talk, feel and experience trucking and explore the career opportunities within the industry. The event is organised by individual truck drivers, transport businesses, community representatives, NSW Police, RMS, Newcastle Council, media and suppliers to the transport industry.
The event continues to be supported by the Australian Trucking Association in addition to many other industry and community sponsors. Funds raised through various activities are donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and to date a total of $1.4 million has been raised.
First held in 1994, the event has stayed true to its initial concepts of improving road safety and increasing the general public’s awareness of the transport industry.
