New Shell facility to secure Sydney bitumen supply

Shell Australia announced the development of a new state of the art bitumen facility in New South Wales.

An agreement signed with Dutch tank storage provider, Vopak, will see the development of the new bitumen import facility located in Port Botany.

Shell’s Sales and Marketing General Manager Craig James said the new facility will allow the company to import and upgrade hot bitumen to supply the NSW market – replacing Clyde refinery production.

James said the facility’s innovative design will allow imported bitumen to meet all local NSW specifications. “The new facility will have three large import tanks and a two bay gantry for loading trucks,” he said. “Through Shell’s partnership with Vopak, we will be able to meet the growing demand for hot bitumen in NSW.”

James described Vopak as an established and well-respected terminal operator, and a partner of choice for Shell both in Australia and overseas.

The new facility is expected to be completed and servicing customers by late 2013.
