New chemical security campaign launched

Attorney General of Australia, Mark Dreyfus, has encouraged transport businesses that carry or store chemicals to be vigilant and to report suspicious activity.

According to Dreyfus, the new chemical security website had a list of 96 chemicals of security concerns, which have the potential to create explosive devices – including drain cleaner, rust remover or even model engine fuel.

“The challenge for government is that when used properly, these chemicals are widely used for a variety of legitimate business and household applications such cleaning or fertilising the lawn but in the wrong hands, these chemicals can be lethal,” Dreyfus said.

The Australian Trucking Association and other industry bodies are working with governments to develop a national code of practice to prevent the loss or theft of chemicals through the chemical supply chain.
