New bridge for Bruce Highway now open

The $12 million upgrade to the Wrights Creek Bridge near the Bruce Highway officially opened this week, with the bridge’s width doubled to 15 metres to accommodate heavy traffic.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, the Australian Government-funded project had greatly improved traffic flow and safety on the south side of Cairns.

“Wrights Creek Bridge was a real pinch point impacting all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists as they slowed to negotiate the narrow bridge on a tight curve,” Minister Truss said.

“This much wider transport corridor has helped ease congestion and improve freight travel on this primary route into Cairns from the south.”

The Australian Government, in partnership with the Queensland Government, is investing $8.5 billion over 10 years to make the Bruce Highway safer, more reliable and less prone to flooding.
