The figures show Isuzu once again topping the truck sales rankings in Australia, breaking the record for the most trucks sold in a year in Australia. However, due to the rise in overall sale, Isuzu’s overall market share has slipped from over 30 per cent last year to 28.6 per cent in 2023.
The ongoing boom in truck sales in Australia saw yet another record breaking total number of trucks over 4,5 tonnes sold again last year, with 47,757 trucks sold in total. This is 3,378 more trucks sold than in the record breaking 2022 total.
Isuzu have now been Australian truck market leaders for 35 years, a period in which the organisation here has grown from strength to strength and continues to set the standard for the other truck makers to follow in the market.
Just about every brand selling trucks in Australia had sales figures up on their 2022 results. The exceptions were UD Trucks, Freightliner, Renault and Western Star all of which struggled with the ongoing supply issues which have been with us since the pandemic.
While the sales figures in each segment of the market are up on the previous year overall, it is in the heavy duty sector where the most powerful growth is occurring with the heavy duty market jumping from a record 14,966 in 2022 to an even higher 17,569 in 2023. All of this was achieved during a period where supply chain issues continue to dog the truck market. Truck manufacturers had to resort to hiring their own ship to get product delivered into this booming market.
The tussle at the top of the heavy duty truck sales rankings continues between Kenworth and Volvo. 2023 saw Kenworth, yet again, reassert its domination of this market segment with 20.8 per cent of the heavy duty segment. However, Volvo continue to close in on the perennial market leader coming second by a total of 177 trucks, well below the 463 truck margin from 2022.
In the medium duty truck segment, Isuzu edges closer, year on year to 50 per cent of truck sales. This year the Japanese truck maker achieved a 49.2 per cent market share, well up on its 2022 result of 46.4 per cent of the market.
It was very much ’steady as she goes’ in the light duty market, with overall sales numbers up just 122 in 2023, when compared to to 2022. Again Isuzu dominate at 45.3 per cent of the market, but Hino returns to its number two slot after slipping to third position in 2022, due to a hiatus on the sales of some models.
