In the discussions about the proposed National Heavy Vehicle Regulations there is a plan to extend the imposition of demerit points for fatigue offences. Currently, some states will hand out demerit points when fatigue breaches are uncovered while others have steered away from this contentious practice.
The NTC Fatigue Maintenance Group has proposed all drivers who severely or critically breach fatigue laws should automatically receive demerit points in the new national rules. There is also a proposal to expand the number of offences which would attract demerit points.
