Refrigerated logistics provider, Minus 1, has partnered with a Melbourne firm to develop a bespoke Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform to improve transport and warehousing operational efficiencies.
The agreement centres on a custom-built system known as the ‘Minus 1 Hub’, which connects data from the company’s Transport Management System, Warehouse Management System, GPS tracking and refrigeration temperature monitoring into a single operational layer.
Because the platform uses an API-first design, it integrates with Minus 1’s existing software rather than replacing it, allowing the company to introduce new capabilities without major system overhauls or disruption to daily operations.
According to Minus 1 CEO Bill Barba, the project was driven by the need to keep pace with the company’s expansion into end-to-end cold chain logistics, including warehousing and broader logistics services.
“We had a TMS, a WMS, GPS tracking and temperature monitoring for our refrigeration units, but they weren’t talking to each other in any sophisticated way,” said Barba.
“We quickly realised we didn’t need to rebuild from scratch. What we had was already working. It just needed something in the middle to connect the dots.”
Arcadian’s technology integrates operational data with external sources such as mapping, traffic and weather feeds to optimise routing, scheduling and operational priorities in real time. The platform can also identify demand patterns and highlight operational risks or bottlenecks before they impact deliveries.
Arcadian Managing Director, Adrian Randall, said demand for applied AI solutions had grown rapidly across transport, logistics and manufacturing sectors.
“This is the start of a critical time which will create a divide between businesses that embed AI and automation into their everyday operations and those who do not,” said Randall.
Minus 1 said the focus of the rollout is improving efficiency and visibility rather than reducing headcount, with anticipated benefits including faster delivery times, lower staff workload and improved on-time performance.
