Metcash has officially opened its new $300 million mega distribution centre (DC) in Truganina, Victoria, which it claims is the largest single-level DC in the country.

At 115,000m², the state-of-the-art facility represents a substantial investment by Metcash in further improving the competitiveness and relevance of the independent retail network in Victoria.

Designed to meet Metcash’s growing wholesale volume needs, the new and more efficient location will service over 4,000 independent stores, premises, and wholesale customers in Victoria while stocking products from over 1,900 suppliers.

Victoria, with 332 IGA stores, represents 25 per cent of the supermarket brand nationally.

The new DC replaces Metcash’s facility at Laverton, Victoria, with an ability to process approximately 23,000 pallets of inventory each week.

“We are extremely pleased to see this major infrastructure investment delivered for our independent retailers and Victorian shoppers,” said Metcash Group CEO, Doug Jones.

“This world-class facility will further enhance the networks’ differentiated offer and relevance for Victorians, while also providing significant benefit for local suppliers.

“The opening today marks a key milestone for Metcash and I would like to congratulate everyone involved on an incredibly smooth transition from Laverton to this new facility.”

Featuring safety and sustainability features such as advanced automation technology, a 2.7-megawatt solar system and 4,780 solar panels, the facility is also targeting a 5 Star Green Star Rating.
