Linfox hosts safety briefing with its top clients

Linfox hosted a number of senior executives from its major clients at a safety briefing in Sydney on Tuesday.

A number of Linfox staff made presentations, including General Manager of Safety and Sustainability Tania Matthews, as well as Chief Inspector Phil Brooks of the NSW Police Trafic and Highway Patrol Command.

The event focused on how Linfox is applying technology towards improving safety throughout the organisation. Speakers included Matt Thomas from Telstra who told the group that the telco was investing $3 billion in mobility systems in 2020 which will include expanding the network’s capabilities in relation to telematics and vehicle automation.

Bill Esteves and Greg Fill from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator addressed the challenges associated with the implementation of electronic work diaries to replace paper based log books. Esteves also spent some time discussing the significant changes to Chain of Responsibility legislation which come into effect mid-year and how industry codes of practice can form vital components of the safety systems required to ensure compliance.

The issue of driver distraction (using telephones, eating, drinking or paying attention to subjects other than the driving task) is being examined by Linfox as part of an in-cab project referred to as ‘Your truck. Better’. The adoption of audible rather than visual alerts will assist in maintaining driver attentiveness. Retina and facial scanning technologies are also being examined as methods to identify the signs of fatigue in conjunction with vehicle-related systems including lane departure warning.

President of the Linfox Resources and Industrial business unit, Scott Nicholls, was delighted with the attendance of the event and the diversity of the presenters.

“If we as an organisation, and as a collective, continue to challenge what best practice really is then we are going to continue to improve,” he said.
