National relocation, removals and storage firm, Kent Relocation Group, has expanded into the Tasmanian market by acquiring Watkins Removals and Storage.
According to a media statement, the Victorian-based family company intends to re-develop and modernise the Watkins business, which had been under administration since August.
“Kent is reorganising and streamlining the Tasmanian firm’s operations and modernising its service delivery and warehousing capabilities in both Launceston and Hobart,” Kent said.
The redeveloped business will trade under the name of Watkins Kent Removals & Storage and will be headquartered in Launceston.
According to Executive Chairman, Graham Kent, the acquisition of Watkins is a natural fit: “Both are family-based businesses that have been operating for more than 70 years. Over that period, Watkins and Kent have created powerful, individual brands based on a similar approach to providing great value and superior customer service.”
Mr Kent also said his company was delighted to be in a position to return Watkins to viability and to re-employ and expand its workforce, which will include 10 permanent staff and 10 casual workers.
He added his company intended to grow the business in Tasmania by delivering
“the same quality service that had enabled Kent to become the largest, family‐owned relocation firm in Australia, with a workforce of more than 500 people.”
The Launceston and Hobart branches of Watkins Kent would provide an important addition to Kent’s already highly developed national footprint. “This acquisition is a strategic investment decision for the Kent Relocation Group and a critical part of our overall national development plan,” he said.
State Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, who applauded Kent’s intention to invest in and expand the business, said the acquisition was confirmation of a growing confidence in the Tasmanian economy.
