International talks on progress for Melbourne’s proposed East West Link

Michael O'Brien, Victorian Treasurer and Terry Mulder, Roads Minister for Victoria, have met with representatives of a number of organisations from Australia and overseas who are interested in partnering Victoria in building the proposed new East West road link in Melbourne. 80 financiers, engineering consultants and construction firms were briefed about the plan in a meeting last week.

“The East West Link is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever contemplated in Victoria with an estimated cost of $6 to $8 billion and there is a strong appetite from the private sector to deliver this project,” said O’Brien. “Engaging with business and industry at the earliest possible stage is a clear indication that the Coalition Government is committed to delivering the East West Link.

“The 2013-14 Victorian Budget has allowed for the State’s full contribution for the delivery of stage one of the East West Link. Business, industry and the community can be assured that our commitment is real and we are ready to partner with business, industry and the Commonwealth Government to deliver this project.”

Mulder said that the statutory planning process is now commencing and the project is expected to go to market for procurement in the second half of 2013.
