The Australian Government has announced that more than $1.8 million will be invested into upgrading the heavy vehicle rest area at Glenrowan on the northbound carriageway of the Hume Freeway, Victoria.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the $1.84 million in improvements will enhance safety for truck drivers and cater for increased use.
“The Glenrowan truck parking area currently has the capacity for all-weather parking for eight trucks as well as toilets, lighting and two picnic tables,” he said.
“Night-time surveys found this location has insufficient capacity, with trucks parking outside the designated spaces during the night, creating potential road safety hazards within the site.
“The upgrade will involve widening the existing truck stop to expand capacity, creating new bays for B-doubles and providing new toilet facilities.”
According to Victorian Minister for Roads, Terry Mulder, rest areas are extremely important along major freight routes. “They encourage drivers to take breaks, which reduces fatigue and the potential for crashes,” he said.
“The expansion of the truck rest stop will allow it to meet expected growth in demand, fostering a safer driving environment for all road users.”
This project is being funded under the Road Freight Initiatives Programme, which includes $60 million from the Australian Government and $20 million from the Victorian Government.
