Hino wins Dakar Rally championship

Hino has won its fourth straight championship at the 2013 Dakar Rally held in Santiago, Chile. The victory was Hino’s thirteenth total, in the under 10-litre class event.

Father and son Hino factory team drivers Yoshimasa and Teruhito Sugawara of Team Sugawara each competed in this year's race, with Yoshimasa racing in a newly-built Hino 500 Series production class truck and Teruhito in a rebuilt 500 Series truck.

“This was the first time we tackled full-blown sand dunes with our new electronically controlled engine, and I was pleasantly surprised that the accelerator was very easy to control, making the truck easier to drive,” Yoshimasa said.

According to Hino Divisional Manager Product Strategy, Marketing and Dealer Development, Alex Stewart, Hino's continued ability to perform well at Dakar points to the quality, durability and reliability of Hino trucks as well as the experience of Team Sugawara.

“It is great to see the technology utilised by the Australian Defence Force, emergency services and the mining sector, with the Hino GT 4×4, at work in a competitive environment,” he said.

Established in 1979, the Dakar Rally as been held as yearly off-road race, organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. The three major competitive groups in the Dakar are in motorcycles, cars and trucks.
