As part of the South Australian Government’s rural property addressing process, the Commissioner of Highways has approved a number of road name changes across the state.
These changes will form part of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) roll out of a standard rural property addressing system across the state, which requires every road to have an official name. The process has involved extensive collaboration with local councils and other groups including historical societies and Aboriginal groups.
So far, names have been changed for Kangaroo Island, Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas and the Hills, Fleurieu, South East, Mallee and Riverland districts.
The most recent name change approvals include:
• Augusta Highway – the new name for the Port Augusta to Port Wakefield road, commonly referred to as Highway One.
• Horrocks Highway – the road called Main North Road from Gawler to Wilmington (via Clare) and the Wilmington to Quorn road. All local councils along the route have agreed to this new name in accordance with a long-standing submission from the Mount Horrocks Historical Society.
