The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is calling for two major reviews to be considered together, avoiding duplication and delivering better safety and productivity outcomes for the industry.
The call was made as part of the NHVR’s response to the Productivity Commission’s draft paper on National Transport Regulatory Reform.
NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto's response called for the Productivity Commission’s findings to be included as part of the ongoing National Transport Commission (NTC) Review into the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).
“I believe that it is essential that the NTC, which is overseeing the HVNL Review, provide sufficient time to fully consider the commission’s recommendations before progressing with any proposed legislative amendments,” said Petroccitto.
“There’s a lot of work to do to make Australia’s heavy vehicle industry as safe and productive as it can be, but I believe we are forging the right path.
“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enact changes that will make the industry better and safer. It would be a mistake not to work towards these reforms in a holistic way.
“I look forward to using findings from both reviews to continue to build on the work undertaken over the past six years,” he said.
The Productivity Commission is assessing the economic impact of reforms to transport regulation related to heavy vehicle safety and productivity, rail safety and maritime safety.
The Commission released its draft report in November last year and recently held public hearings in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
In other news, the NHVR is introducing changes to improve field engagement.
