Hands-on emissions testing at 2013 TMC

At the 2013 Paccar and Dealer TMC at the Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) the doors will be opened to its fully equipped Vehicle and Emissions Laboratory, allowing delegates to take part in an active emissions test using its heavy vehicle dynamometer.

The ACE heavy vehicle dynamometer is used both commercially and for research and training purposes, including work with alternative fuels testing and new engine technologies. With a maximum load capacity of 20 tonnes, it uses a 2.5 metre diameter roller to test the power output from a truck’s drive wheels.

Kangan Institute’s Automotive Enterprise business development manager Paul Beutel said TMC2013 is a unique opportunity for fleet and workshop operators to get up close and personal to a heavy vehicle dynamometer in use, as well as see the rest of the ACE Vehicle and Emissions Laboratory.

“Many workshop managers and fleet operators would be familiar with emission test reports such as the DT80. However, not many would have seen the process conducted,” said Beutel. “In this session, participants will see a live DT80 test and the operation of the emission test equipment. The dynamometer can also measure drive train losses, and can be used to measure such things as difference in rolling resistance and friction of two different types of tyres.”

Places for the heavy vehicle dynamometer demonstration are limited, and can be reserved through online registration. TMC 2013will run from October 28 to 30 at the Automotive Centre of Excellence at the Kangan Institute in Docklands, Melbourne.
