Empty container park trial applauded by VTA

Maresk Line has announced it will trial an extension of operating hours at its Melbourne empty container depot for six months beginning from 17 January 2011, a decision warmly welcomed by the Victorian Transport Association (VTA).

During the this trial period, the empty container depot, located at Yarraville, will extend its operating hours from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday rather than the usual 7.30am to 4pm.

“We sincerely congratulate Maersk Line on its cooperative approach to working with all landside stakeholders to improve empty container chain operating efficiencies in Melbourne,” said VTA Deputy CEO, Neil Chambers.
“Maersk is the first shipping line to heed the call from landside stakeholders, strongly supported the VTA, to underwrite the additional costs of extended operating hours for container parks.”
“The vision and leadership displayed by Maersk should not be lost on importers and exporters, and their transport service providers. Everybody should consider shipping with Maersk ahead of other lines because they display this kind of willingness to cooperate with others to help improve the transport chain.”

He comtinued, “The VTA also calls on transport operators and their clients to take full advantage of the extended hours at Maersk when they commence next year.”
“We’ve urged our members, and we would warn the transport industry generally, that if you don’t use it, you will lose it!”
