Eaton General Manager out in the cold

The CEO Sleepout is an annual event organised by the St Vincent de Paul Society to raise funds for and increase awareness of the problem of homelessness in Australia. This year a representative from our industry will be taking part, Martin Toomey, General Manager at Eaton Corp.

Over 100,000 Australians are out on our streets homeless each night of the year. Just under half of these are women; a quarter are under the age of 18. The Vinnies CEO Sleepout on Thursday 20 June 2013 has been developed as a way for business leaders to raise awareness and funds in support of essential homeless services across the country.

“I can't imagine in a modern Australia what would drive people to the point of despair where they have nothing left in their life but to sleep in the street,” said Martin. “Then again I have yet to have a conversation with any of these people either. I can imagine however that if we did talk, I could relate to their fear and to the coldness. And I would feel an overwhelming desire to get involved.

“As a compassionate business leader I truly believe that authentic power is service; especially to the poorest, the weakest and the least important.”
