Eaton AMT in new Avia D series

Czechoslovakian brand Avia Trucks used the Brisbane Truck Show as its launching pad to the Australian commercial vehicle market supported by Eaton and ZF.

The inaugural D series comes with well-known driveline components that the Australian market has an affinity with, including Eaton’s Ultrashift Automated Manual Transmission (AMT).

In fact, the Australian arm of global powerhouse Eaton was actively involved in the development of a suitable AMT for the novice to ensure it will satisfy the Australian clientle.

According to Eaton, the two pedal self-shifting Eaton transmission will be available as an option to the ZF six-speed manual, which is standard equipment for the Avia D120 which has a GVM of 11,990kg.

Specifically intended for use in trucks such as concrete agitators that operate in conjunction with kerb and pavement laying machines, the application requires extended periods of very low speeds usually with the transmission in deep reduction mode.

Eaton representatives told CRTAustralia that although this market sector is currently small, it is growing steadily and that seven vehicles with the new AMT equipped have already entered service in the past few months.

Eaton are currently working on adapting the transmission for use in the 4X4 version of the Avia D120 as well as for the 4X4 Avia bus, which will be targeting the mining industry later in 2013.
