Cranes reach greater mobility on NSW road network

Access for mobile cranes will be improved through a mobile crane network according to NSW Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey.

Ongoing discussions between the NSW Government and the industry to improve access for mobile cranes are set to deliver long awaited improvements to efficiency for the construction sector with a view to maintaining road safety and minimising travel time impacts on the broader community.

Pavey said the establishment of a 60 tonne mobile crane network in conjunction with extended and more consistent night-time travel options would be in place following 15 February.

“These changes will support greater utilisation of the existing road network, reducing travel times and costs for crane operators, making it easier to do business in NSW,” she said.

“This announcement builds on the previous work done to enable 50 tonne mobile cranes greater access to the state road network and demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to cutting red tape.”

Roads and Maritime Services has worked in partnership with the Crane Industry Council of Australia and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to achieve the recent outcome.

Cranes will now have easier access to key construction zones when travelling on the State road network to the Parramatta, Liverpool and Chatswood CBDs utilising the M2, M5, M7 and M4 between Mamre Road, St Marys and Silverwater Road, Silverwater.

Under the agreement, mobile cranes up to 15.5 m long now have increased flexibility in their travel times with travel now being available from sunset to sunrise.

Mobile crane and dolly combinations in excess of 15.5 m will also have increased flexibility to travel at night time, subject to conditions including travel outside of clearway times, peak times, or other restrictions in place on specific roads.
