Brisbane-based Cannon Logistics is replenishing its fleet of prime movers.
The LTL specialist headquartered in Lytton has just recently taken delivery of four new Kenworth prime movers – two K220s and two T610SARs – for its daily long haul operations.
A committed Kenworth fleet, according to Director and Founder Zac Popov, the new trucks move between mining sites in central Queensland and the east coast where they will often carry 48-foot trailers laden with refrigerated and general freight.
“These new trucks are doing long trips on doubles and B-triples into western and central Queensland. They go as far as Emerald, Moranbah, Longreach, and Mt Isa up to 2,000 kilometres away,” said Popov.
“The shorter treks up the coast to Rockhampton and Yeppoon are still over 600 kilometres.”
Though the fleet is technically mixed, Cannon Logistics is primarily a Kenworth fleet.
“Always have been and probably always will be,” said Popov.
The Kenworth K220s feature a 2.3-metre Aerodyne raised roof sleeper and are finished off with bullbars and stainless steel accessories.
They are powered by a Cummins X15 rated to 550hp and have been matched with an Eaton Endurant XD Pro 18-Speed automated transmission.
Popov, through long time sales ally Jim Boler at Brown and Hurley, opted for a Meritor MT21-165 rear Axle with Meritor RPL Greaseless Driveline.
Cannon Logistics dispatches up to ten roadtrains a week and optimise freight in B-triple, AB-triple, B-double and even Type 2 roadtrain configurations.
“I like bonneted trucks more than I do cabovers but I’ve got to be mindful of the type of work we’re doing,” said Popov.
“Because the new units are hooked up to 48-foot trailers it’s something of a balancing act with the bonneted trucks.
“The T610SAR has a set-forward front axle which allows us to tow our 48-footers and 34-pallet B-doubles without a bullbar.”
The prime movers fitted with bullbars are often utilised as roadtrains.
“Plus different drivers like different things — I’m aware of that,” said Popov.
“The T610SAR is a very versatile truck. Certainly, many people think the K220 is the most versatile but the T610 is very good option with the spacings on it.”
The new Kenworth T610SARs come in an Aero860 Sleeper only the powertrain differs with an Eaton Fuller RTLO20918 18-speed manual gearbox favoured although there is commonality in the driveline.
All four prime movers ride on Kenworth Airglide 460 Rear Suspension.
The cab on each truck is fitted with inverter, microwave, TV, draw fridge and Custom Air sleeper.
Popov said he had been dealing exclusively with Jim Boler for the last 20 years when it came to purchasing new Kenworth product.
“We have a good understanding that has been forged over the time,” said Popov.
“It remains an important partnership to our business.”
