FedEx Express has begun building a Bundaberg facility to boost freight efficiency with automated high-volume parcel sorting.
The site, which is expected to be operational next year, spans 5,962 square metres and will be equipped with an advanced automated conveyor system capable of sorting up to 1,500 packages per hour.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn and Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Gary Kirk along with the FedEx regional team.
“This new facility in Bundaberg is a direct investment in the future of Australian regional businesses,” said FedEx Australasia Regional Vice President Peter Langley.
“We are committed to empowering local businesses, particularly our small and medium-sized customers, by providing them with faster, more efficient connections.
“This hub will act as a vital link, seamlessly integrating Bundaberg’s thriving industries into our agile domestic network and creating new opportunities for them to compete on the global stage.”
FedEx said the facility will provide efficient express pick-up and delivery services across the greater Bundaberg area including Gin Gin, Childers and the Biggenbden region.
The Bundaberg region is reported to be the second-fastest growing local economy in Queensland with a growth rate of 7.1 per cent according to the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan 2023.
At the start of 2024, the local economy was valued at $5.1 billion and Gross Regional Product is now estimated at $6.08 billion.
Mayor Blackburn said the arrival of the new facility is a clear indicator of confidence in the region’s economy.
“It will not only create new job opportunities during construction and operation but also provide our local businesses with the advanced logistics and improved connectivity they need to thrive and compete on a national and international scale,” she said.
“This is a significant step forward for the economic future of Bundaberg and the Wide Bay-Burnett region.”
Parent company Federal Express Corporation provides transportation services to more than 220 countries and territories via a global air-and-ground network.
