The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) called for registration charges to be decreased for 70 per cent in its submission to the National Transport Commission’s draft 2014 Heavy Vehicle Charges Determination.
The ATA said it supported moving to the proposed option A charging model from July 1, 2014.
However, the ATA said it does not support the NTC’s proposal for a three year staged implementation of its updated charging model or the proposed NHVR funding allocation.
ATA National Policy Manager David Coonan said the NTC’s consultation process had been very positive in acknowledging the overcharging that occurs under the current heavy vehicle charges system.
“The ATA supports moving to the NTC’s proposed charging option A by 1 July 2014 to stop this over recovery, and then continuing to improve the charging system by moving to option B by 1 July 2015,” he said.
“The trucking industry has always been dedicated to paying its way. However, we know that delaying the start of this new charging option will overcharge operators by $200 million.”
