Arnhem Highway restrictions lifted

Restrictions have been lifted to allow heavy vehicles to temporarily travel along the Arnhem Highway in the Northern Territory to deliver much-needed construction materials.

NT Minister for Transport, Peter Styles, said due to extensive flood damage on the road, restrictions for heavy vehicles had been in place along the four kilometres of floodplains.

“Temporary bridging of the damaged area on the Arnhem Highway was completed last week and will allow for the hauling of materials,” Styles said.
“An 80 per cent legal limit and 13-axle maximum will be in place, with the hauling only to be permitted between 6am and 6pm.”

Styles said traffic management would be in place at both ends of the floodplain and at the Corroboree Tavern to ensure compliance regarding speed limit and loading.

“This will also ensure a 15 minute gap between trucks across the floodplain as this should allow the road to recover between movements,” he said.
“Please ensure all directions are followed and all signage is obeyed while these restrictions are in place, to ensure safety of motorists and pedestrians.

“I would ask all motorists to please drive to the conditions of this road and be mindful or the speed and traffic restrictions in place.”

Variable message boards will be placed in the appropriate position to warn motorist of the temporary bridging.

Trucks heading east from Darwin will have no restrictions on their timing as they will be deemed to be empty.
