AJM Transport celebrates 20th anniversary

Overnight express specialist, AJM Transport, is celebrating 20 years of operations.

AJM Transport was founded in 2004 by Managing Director, Anthony Mansell, and through various facilities and making frequent additions to the fleet, the company has grown to now have a dominating presence around Australia.

Based out of Newcastle, AJM Transport has branches in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, through which it transports express and time sensitive freight along the eastern seaboard.

Reflecting back on 20 years, Mansell told Prime Mover the anniversary is a proud moment for the family business.

“There’s been a little bit of talk about it leading up to this year, but I guess now that it’s here you sort of go, ‘gee whiz’,” he said.

“It feels like it’s gone really quick, but we have achieved a lot.”

While Mansell loves trucks, the main highlight over the last two decades, he said, has been the people.

“The people are the biggest thing that I’ve grown with and learnt around,” he said.

“People are everything in the business. I’m only as good as the people around me, I don’t have all the ideas.

Mansell’s first new truck was a Kenworth T404 SAR which he first purchased at the beginning of AJM Transport to get the company going. Now, he said history is repeating itself with a new Legend SAR being built for the fleet.

“To add to that, our eldest son is working in the business,” he said.

“He had his rigid licences for some time, but last November, he got his B-double licence.

“So, we’re picking an SAR up which we did 20 years ago, and my son, who was two in 2004, is pestering me to go and get it.”

Going forward, Mansell said he is looking to further grow the business.

“I have made it very clear to everyone that in this space we want to grow if there’s an opportunity there, which is probably not dissimilar to what we’ve done in the last 20 years, but we’re actively looking,” he said.

“We’re probably more on the front foot than we’ve ever been, and that’s just timing and infrastructure. So, we just want to keep going forward with that.”

A new express overnight contract, relocating to a new Melbourne location, plans for a new purpose-built Queensland facility and a goal to expand the company’s refrigeration operations will set AJM Transport up for the future.

“We will keep expanding on what we already do on our network and what we have on the eastern seaboard,” Mansell said.

“Twenty years ago my wife and I bought one truck, and the rest is history.

“It’s not that simple, but that’s how it started. It was about trying to do something for ourselves and it’s evolved overtime.

“It is a bit of a pinch-me moment when you say it like that.”
